Sheer Silk Blouse with Frills

Writer's picture: IdilIdil

Silk blouses with frills are a timeless classic that can add elegance and femininity to any outfit. These blouses can be dressed up or down, and can be worn to a variety of events. While they may look complicated to make, with some patience you can make one for yourself.

Materials:

To make a silk blouse with frills, you will need the following materials:

Silk fabric of your choice that is lightweight and drapes well. You will need about 1 meters of fabric, depending on the size of your blouse.

Frill fabric: Choose a lightweight fabric that complements your silk fabric. Chiffon or organza are good choices. Or you can choose the same fabric with the bodice for the frills like I did. You will need about 1 meter of fabric for frills.

Sewing machine: You will need a sewing machine with a straight stitch. Make sure you use silk needle. I recommend to use this one from Schmetz.

Other materials: Thread, scissors, pins, iron.

At the end of this post you can find a list of most of the equipment I use for my projects.

Instructions:

Cut out your fabric: Start by cutting out the front and back pieces of your blouse from the silk fabric. Use a pattern or an existing blouse as a guide. Make sure to add seam allowances to your pattern. Here I used a Burda pattern for the main bodice and the frills on the arms. I added extra frills to the neckline which were not there on the pattern.

Cut out your frills: Cut out strips of frill fabric that are at least twice the length of the location you plan to sew them. The length will determine the fullness of the frills. I cut the neck frills on the selvedge edge of the fabric so I didn't have to hem the neck frills.

Hem your frills: Hem the short ends of your frill fabric. This will prevent fraying. Here I only hemmed the arms because it was cut on circular shape not from the selvedge edge like the neck pieces.

Sew your blouse: Sew the front and back pieces of your blouse together at the shoulders and side seams. Add the arm pieces. Finish the edges with a zigzag stitch or an overlock.

Finally, Press your seams with an iron.

You can also experiment with different colors and prints for your silk fabric and frills to create a unique look. Here are the pictures from my project. I hope you like it!

Enjoy!
